Eagle Nature Foundation
2010 School Essay Contest
Sponsored by Eagle Nature Foundation, Ltd. (ENF)

Purpose:  Since it was placed on the Endangered Species List over 30 years ago,
our national symbol, the bald eagle, has come back from being endangered in 43
states, to actually being delisted by the FWS.  In order to ensure that this comeback
remains a reality, so the bald eagle may continue to fly free over our great nation,
we need to develop an awareness among our nation’s young people that the Bald
Eagle must remain a viable part of our environment and our heritage.  ENF is
proud to provide this opportunity for our coming generation to express their views
on the importance of our Symbol of Freedom to the world, and to future
generations.  We want students to stress the pros and cons of saving our National
Symbol in the wild.

Rules:  The essay must be entitled “Is It Important to Preserve the Bald Eagle in
the Wild?”, and must be limited to 500 words or less.  There is no cost to the
school or the student to enter the contest.  Each public school, private school or
home school, will be limited to two entries in the Jr. high division and two entries in
the Sr. high school division.  Therefore, to comply with this requirement, all entries
must be prejudged by the school staff, so only the school’s two best essays are
entered.  All entries must be postmarked no later than September 13, 2010.  To be
eligible for a prize each student must orally present his or her own essay at Eagle
Fest, on Sept. 25.

Judging:  Our preliminary panel of judges will choose the top four entries in each
division.  The eight finalists, 4 from each division, will be notified of their being
chosen by Sept. 20, 2010.  The final judging will take place at 1:00 pm, Sept. 25,
during the Fall Eagle Festival in Platteville, when the eight semi-finalists must
orally present their essays to the general public in order to qualify for any of the
prizes.  Prizes will be awarded at the judge’s discretion.  We need to know the shirt
size of each student, as each of the semifinalists will be given a t-shirt to wear
during the Eagle Fest, so the general public will be able to identify them.

Awards:  The first place winner in each division will receive a check for $100, plus
a trophy; the second place winner will receive $50; third place winner $25; and
fourth place winner $10.  A public, private school, or home school, represented by
the top essay winner in each division will receive a plaque and $50 for the
department, or family teacher, conducting the essay contest.
